ABOUT BREW

BREW™ is QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™, an open, standard applications execution platform for wireless devices. BREW is a very thin, standardized platform that resides in handsets, from inexpensive, mass-market cell phones through high-end, multi-purpose wireless devices.

QUALCOMM's BREW initiative is the only approach that offers wireless application developers, handset manufacturers and wireless service providers a complete, open, end-to-end solution for wireless application development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK™ (Software Development Kit) for developers, the BREW application platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that enables developers and their carrier customers to get applications to market and coordinates the billing and payment processes for them.

The BREW platform opens the way for developers to create applications for wireless devices. It opens the floodgates to a wide variety of genuinely useful, fun applications. People want the freedom to choose applications and services without compromise — at work and at play — how, when and where they want…virtually anytime, anywhere.

WHO IS IT DEVELOPED FOR?

Developers

BREW is designed to allow developers to write in whatever language they choose. Native BREW applications are written in C/C++. While native BREW apps. are written in C/C++, the BREW platform supports programming in other languages, such as Java™ technology and XML. And, because it can support Virtual Machines (VMs) and microbrowsers, applications and content written to those specifications are supported as well. The BREW architecture is, by design, easy to write to and open to extension by third parties, enabling even developers with no background in wireless technology, the ability to write wireless applications.

Most important, BREW is the only complete and fully integrated end-to-end solution available for wireless developers. BREW provides developers support throughout the entire process of creating, marketing and making money from their wireless applications. BREW is about the technology and the business of wireless.

Manufacturers
QUALCOMM was in the handset manufacturing business (QUALCOMM sold its handset division to Kyocera Wireless in 2000), so it is intimately aware of the lengthy time-to-market issues associated with integrating applications into handsets. BREW eliminates those problems, and more, for handset OEMs. BREW reduces software development costs for manufacturers by enabling the deployment of BREW-enabled applications on multiple handset models - even on the least expensive mass-market phones. Now, manufacturers can easily differentiate their products with custom BREW extensions and their own pre-loaded BREW applications.

Carriers
No one doubts the role data will play in the future of the wireless industry. With BREW, carriers can bolster voice service offerings, differentiate their products and services and increase average revenue per user. BREW is well on its way, just one year after being introduced, to being the technology and business platform of choice for carriers wanting to identify new services, expand existing offerings, feature custom applications and take advantage of a vastly expanded marketplace - with minimal effort and without the high costs historically associated with creating a competitive service offering. The BREW platform is opening the door to a whole new world of revenue through rich, differentiated data applications and services.
