BREW, Java Technology and e-Business Building a Future
Together
This session covers the partnership between IBM and QUALCOMM to
enable wireless e-business applications. The advantages of a tight
integration of a J2ME(TM) "Java Powered"(TM) runtime environment
and BREW will be discussed BREW, for provisioning applications
to devices, and Java technology to access existing enterprise applications.
For carriers, this means the ability to offer solutions to enterprise
subscribers, connecting customers and employees to data, transactions
and applications. For developers, this means the latest Eclipse-based
development tools for building, testing and deploying the next generation
of enterprise wireless applications.
Speaker: Paul Buck, President and CEO of OTI Group, IBM

BREW Technology Overview
Born out of QUALCOMM's experience with chipsets, handsets and application
integration, BREW was designed specifically for the demands of mass
market mobile phones and other devices. BREW is extremely compact
and efficient, tapping into the embedded functions of the chip to
support a broad range of applications, storage and connectivity
features. This session will cover the history of BREW, as well as
its general characteristics, architecture, test tools and programming
model.

Entering the BREW Developer Community
As you enter into the BREW Developer community, QUALCOMM is here
to provide support as you develop and take your applications to
market. In this session, you will learn how your company becomes
an Authenticated BREW Developer and about the support tools QUALCOMM
provides, such as the BREW Software Development Kit (SDK),
BREW Developer Tools, online forums, tech support and marketing
support like TRUE BREW testing information and BREW logo usage
guidelines. This session with share information about the multi-tiered
BREW Developer Alliance program, in which BREW developers are automatically

BREW SDK Overview
The BREW SDK enables developers to write applications for BREW-enabled
phones without having possession of the actual handset hardware.
By making the functionality of complex, embedded device software
accessible through a familiar, high-level environment, the SDK speeds
and facilitates application development, as well as the porting
of existing applications to BREW. In this session we'll provide
a detailed technical overview of the BREW SDK, demonstrate how to
use the Emulator and also write an actual sample application.

BREW Devices
This session will provide an introduction to the OEM environment
with respect to BREW and covers the memory, display and key OEM
functions that are used by the developer. The OEM device data sheet
provides a vehicle for information from the OEM to the developer
on each specific BREW platform and helps to define how an application
will run on a BREW device. The wireless application enviornment
is different from the PC environment and differences in stack size
and other variables are key to the application developer.

TRUE BREW Testing Overview
After you've completed development of your application, you'll need
to put it through the TRUE BREW (TM) testing program, which helps
ensure a minimum level of application stability, quality and compliance
with standard platform requirements. This program provides our carrier
partners with the comfort level they need before introducing applications
onto their networks. This session will cover digital signatures,
pre-requisites for submitting applications, what gets tested, and
some common pitfalls to avoid.

Porting & Debugging your BREW Application
After you get an application to work in the SDK, the next logical
step is to port it to the handset. More often than not, this is
a very seamless exercise. However, due to certain limitations in
the SDK, it is likely that certain aspects of the application will
not get exposed and tested until it is on the handset. This session
will cover the step-by-step process to get your application working
on the handset. Learn how easy it is to port your application, and
pick up some useful debugging tips.
